Medical Managers Group Awards $2,600 in Scholarships to Columbus Tech StudentsDecember 12, 2007 - The West Central Georgia Medical Managers Association (WCGMMA) has awarded $2,600 in scholarship money to five Columbus Technical College students studying either Medical Assisting or Radiologic Technology. The scholarship winners are: Renee Martinez/Medical Assisting, Philip Andrews/Radiology, Christy Ellerbee/Medical Assisting, Lori Fuller/Radiology, and Tronual Gainey/Medical Assisting. The five Columbus Technical College students received their checks at a WCGMMA luncheon on Tuesday, December 11, 2007.
This is the first year in the 14 years that the WCGMMA chapter has been in existence that so much scholarship money has been distributed to so many students. Prior to this year, only three students were scholarship recipients and they received between $250 – 300 each. For 2007, four students received $500 each and a fifth student (Renee Martinez) received $600 – to recognize her outstanding 3.71 grade point average. Peggy LaMee is the past president of WCGMMA. She is thrilled the group was able to distribute this much money to students. She says the increase in membership in their organization from 22 to 77 within one year, along with their annual dues, made these scholarships possible. “Our primary focus is assisting students in the Columbus area,” LaMee said. “We’re just happy we can do this and hope to help deserving students for years to come.” The Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Columbus Technical College, Linn Storey, says scholarships like these allow students to concentrate more time and energy on their school work. "Any amount of scholarship money helps students pay for uniforms, books and supplies thus allowing them to work less," Storey said. "Working fewer hours outside of school has a direct correlation to higher grades and success rates." The West Central Georgia Medical Managers Association is a chapter of the Georgia Medical Group Management Association (GMGMA). According to its website, the group "provides educational opportunities and resources to promote professionalism in medical practice management." For more information on GMGMA, visit www.gmgma.org.
