Columbus Technical College is concerned about the safety and security of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The College is committed to providing a safe and protected environment which promotes the pursuit of our College mission. Since the total isolation of crime from this or any campus is not possible, the College has put into effect policies and procedures as precautionary measures to protect campus members.

Availability of Security Information

Campus security information is provided in a variety of ways, including brochures, the College website, and student information sheets. Regardless of the format, our goal is to encourage students and employees to be responsible for their security and the security of others

Campus Law Enforcement

Security is provided by off-duty Muscogee County Deputy Sheriffs and contracted security officers. Campus Security is the responsibility of the Vice President of Operations. Campus Security Officers are responsible for law enforcement, security, and emergency response.

The Security Office, located in Patrick Hall (Room P-206), is open from 7: AM - 11PM, Monday through Friday (Monday - Thursday, beginning October 1, 2008), and during other weekend activities. Duties of the Security Officers include:

  • Patrolling the campus for hazardous conditions and unusual activity;
  • Enforcing the rules regarding motor vehicles on campus: parking, speeding, etc.;
  • Assisting with problems encountered in the buildings, grounds, or parking lots;
  • Completing reports for accidents, injuries, and criminal incidents;
  • Assisting in building inspections for safety compliance.

The campus Chief of Security has responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Security Office and staff.

Criminal Action and Emergency Reporting

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and/or incidents to the Security Officers or the Department of Operations. To report suspicious activity/incident, a crime or an emergency:

This does not, in any way, prohibit the reporting of an emergency to the Sheriff, Police, Fire Department or Emergency Medical Services - dial 911.

Security and Access to Campus Facilities

The Columbus Technical College campus is located in north Columbus and consists of an administration, library and six academic buildings. Campus buildings and grounds are patrolled on a regular basis and any unusual incidents or hazardous conditions are reported by telephone or radio to the Security Office.

Security considerations are emphasized during the general maintenance of campus facilities. Campus buildings and parking areas are well-lighted to provide a safe environment. Campus buildings and facilities are accessible during normal business operating hours, Monday - Friday (Monday - Thursday, beginning October 1, 2008), Saturday classes, and certain special functions.

Incident Reporting and Statistics

A written daily log is submitted to the Vice President of Operations and are listed in a publicly viewable log within two business days. The faculty advisor, charged with monitoring an off-campus activity, will report unusual incidents to Security and submit a written report to the Vice President of Operations.

Identification Cards and Parking Permits

For safety reasons, all members of the campus community to include students are required to wear College picture identification cards, or College employee name tags, while on campus. Students are also required to have campus I.D. cards for use in the bookstore, library, etc. Identification cards are issued to all students upon registration. The fee for replacement of a lost card is $5.00. Parking permits obtainable from the Business Office are required to identify vehicles authorized to be on campus, and owners whose vehicles are illegally parked or involved in accidents.

Visitors to Campus

Visitors to campus should report to the Security Office located in Patrick Hall, room P-206, or the Information Center in the Administration lobby. Children must be under constant supervision of an accompanying adult while on campus, and may not be brought into classrooms, laboratories, or the Cosmetology Department.

Alcohol and Illegal Drugs

Columbus Technical College complies with federal, state, and local laws including those that regulate the possession, use and sale of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances. The College's drug and alcohol policy (on/off campus) prohibits, at a minimum, the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on its property, or as part of any of its activities.

Weapons Possession

Possession, use, or sale of firearms, ammunition, fireworks, explosives of any type, or any implement defined by Georgia Law as a weapon, is prohibited on campus or at Columbus Technical College sponsored events. (Consult the Student Handbook (4.5mb, pdf Get Acrobat Reader) for more details).

Smoke/Tobacco-Free Campus

Columbus Technical College is a “Smoke/Tobacco-Free college. “Smoke/Tobacco-Free” means that tobacco use in any form is not allowed on campus. Anyone found to be in violation of the policy will be subject to disciplinary action.

Sex Offender Information

The Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act Amendment to the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act - requires the College to notify the campus community where law enforcement agency information may be obtained concerning registered sex offenders . Campus Emergencies

Fire evacuation routes, tornado shelter maps, and emergency instructions are posted on classroom, office, and hallway bulletin boards throughout campus. It is the responsibility of all members of the campus community to comply with the instructions of Security Officers, College administrators, and emergency personnel in the event of an emergency.

Lost and Found

Lost and found articles may be sought or turned in to the Security Office located in Patrick Hall, room P-206.
